The Abraham Lincoln Commission, a bi-partisan congressional commission established to examine the impact of study abroad in higher education, has issued a call for colleges and universities to significantly expand the offerings and opportunities for education abroad for US students. The commission has established a goal of having more than one million American students studying abroad in the next ten years (up from current counts of under 300,000). Legislation has been introduced to develop new forms of funding to support this goal, including new programs specifically targeting community and technical college students. In this article, Inside Higher Education examines the goals of the Lincoln Commission. While laudable in its efforts, the article also cautions that it is important to develop quality programs of international learning, not just increases in raw numbers.
